Where Did English come from? The earliest forms
of English were brought to Britain by AngloSaxon
invaders in the 5th century and were called Old
English. However, after the National Norman
Conquest of England in 1066, the Anglophone
(Old English) language became less common, and
French became the standard language. After the
arrival of the Normans, which is known as Middle
English, that remained until the 1470s when late
Middle English became general, which is a form of
English based in London. The English language we
know today spread throughout the world between
the late 16th and early 17th centuries. English
Language Day was first celebrated in 2010.

English Language Day is celebrated on 23 April, the
birthday and date of death of William Shakespeare.
The Day is the result of a 2010 initiative by the
Department of Global Communications. English
Language Day aims to inform people about the
history, culture and achievements associated with the
language. The day often features book-reading events,
English quizzes, poetry and literature exchanges, and
other activities. English has certainly risen to become
the most influential language in the modern world.
From grade school classrooms to global companies,
English has become the language across many
countries, peoples, and cultures. It also allows you
to communicate with new people. It helps you to see
things from a different perspective or get a deeper
understanding of another culture.
